I want go Jack’s house.”

Jonah, my thoughtful, adventurous first-born beautiful child, continues to amaze me at every turn. He is at one of the stages in life where he is brutally honest at times (“Dad, I have owey bottom – kiss it?” – thanks for sharing), and at other times he’s learning that being a little less than honest can get him what he wants, which sad to say is part of what you realize as you are thrown into new fits of social development.

He has learned for example, that we are pleased with him if he uses the toilet at school (rather than his underpants). So the other day on the way home from school we broached the subject as we generally do, and he answered confidently, “yes, indeed my unwitting and dare I say ill-follicled father, I have successfully navigated the treacherous watery depths of the plop-filled echo chamber that is the school bath and its heathen commode, and I have emerged victorious, lighter for my troubles, clear-headed and of sound colon.” Or something like that. It may have been, “Yeah! I go poopoo in the toilet!”, but I am sure I heard the word “indeed” in there somewhere. At any rate, we had a little meeting with his guide today (they are not teachers, nay, but guides in Montessori methodology, which we agree with I must say), and yeah NO, no toilet. it was my darling Mr. Poopypants goes to Portland in one set of clothes, and comes home in another (though he will never hear those words cross my lips). Ah, how we must now volunteer at the school more to make up for this.

He also has a much more developed long-term memory than I would have expected at this age; not that he’s unusual in this way, its more that I didn’t really realize how much we all remember when we’re in our 2′s. He’s in preschool now and is surrounded by lots of other children his age, all sharing projects and rugs and snacks together, but he still hangs onto the memories of the friends he has in California. He asks about Jack and Ellie daily, and is always on the lookout for their Dad’s vehicle. It never fails that when we’re in just about any parking lot, he spots a car that looks like their car, and asks excitedly, “John’s car?”

This used to break our hearts every time he’d ask it, as we are ourselves suffering from the same feelings but are too afraid of the kinetic flood waters to test the emotional wherewithal of the guy in line behind us at the grocery store. As adults we’re pretty good at digging a nice comfy ditch for those emotions, chucking them in desperately, and covering them over with a lot of gravelly denial, hoping that the pain goes away by the time we get through a couple more stoplights. (Strangely stoplights hold no sentimental value for me. Now stop signs on the other hand…but everyone has that hangup.) 2 year olds are generally not good at this denial thing; if it hurts, they cry. If it tickles, they laugh hysterically. No digging and chucking; when he cries he cries and its done. Laughing follows within seconds.

I also know that in the process of uprooting ourselves we have projected a lot of our own over-thought emotions and reasonings onto his little expressions of feelings. For example, when I long for the people that I love and miss, it becomes this handful of cracked walnuts that bounces around my stomach and chest, occasionally smashing into the backs of my eyes after doing the river dance on the upper regions of my throat. Sandblasted walnut shells are systematically destroying my rods and cones and chipping off chunks of my wisdom teeth. I know it. So when I hear him verbally missing his friends, I know that I project this feeling I have onto him; he doesn’t have that same overdeveloped sense of longing yet; but I swear sometimes it feels like that’s what he’s telling me.

I have often wished that I had a valve on the back of my head so that I could turn the little handle (not a knob) and let all of my thoughts flush out like so much steam and vapor, until I could regain a sense of quietness in my own head. I wouldn’t have to use it a lot. I could see letting some of the walnut shells and bone chips out too. As Henry Rollins said:

“I want to disconnect myself
pull my brainstem out and unplug myself
I want nothing right now, I want to pull it out”

What I am coming to realize is my 2-year old still has this facility; he is able to dump his mind out in sharp outbursts of tears or laughter, and be done with it. He is able to say that he misses his friends today, and every day, and is able to move on to the next bit of mischief within seconds without being consumed with a sense of melancholy that is exacerbated by Northwest rain. He is able to see a picture of his friend Corbin and smile briefly, think about Corbin’s parents and his dog, and continue to dump his cars happily on the dining room floor to wake his finally sleeping sister.

In other words, unlike his jaded father, my son, my wise, innocent, beautiful 2-year old son, has a valve, and no walnuts. Even Henry Rollins might learn a thing or two.

First up: Group 94 (http://www.group94.com/)
Group 94 has been around for a while, but the latest version of their site represents a pretty cool use of video and text to convey information (pop-up television meets Belgian designers). Also, don’t miss their old site which is somewhat dated from flash design standards, but has a nice navigation intro and clean layout (albeit a little disjointed. a little.). While in the old site, Check their projects link – nice simple layout to display site design projects, although I could use a better alternative to a scroll bar than one-at-a-time arrows (although it has a cool flash-esque bounce effect when you scroll, but its kind of straight-out-of-the-box feeling). And true to the classic Flash weakness, I can’t give you a link to the project page because its Flash…So you’ll have to figger it out.

From there, look at the work Group 94 is doing for Lindbergh (http://www.livinglindbergh.com/). Again, nothing hugely revolutionary (Mondrian is rolling in his grave over the pallet choice, but I like it and I think he secretly does too, even in his deadness), but its a nice change to see someone using the full browser space rather than a more common box in the middle (which I am of course proudly guilty of doing in the past).

I’m also kinda’ digging their work for Annie Lennox (http://www.annielennox.co.uk/). Really like the way her image moves back and forth to correspond to the layers of navigation. I could live without the automatic music (even if her site is about her music), but that’s just me. I’ve found that default music on a site is often something that a lot of junky site building companies (and folks who call themselves designers, and then broadcast that self-proclaimed title on the internet) use to make up for lack of solid information design or meaningful content. Its great for a myspace page, but leave it out of your company’s “real” site. Anyways, very simple way to get information across, which is good in my view.

Next: For some reason, I can’t seem to put this site down: Colette (http://www.colette.fr/) I don’t know if its the iconic little tv-head guys, or the sense that I’m tapping into Paris pop culture with the continual change in music, but I keep coming back (funny that the music thing doesn’t seem to bother me on this site). I can’t tell you why exactly, although I like the flash intro to choose a language. doorbells and speech rather than plain old text links are pretty chic.

And lastly for today, check Carl de Keyzer’s photography site (http://www.carldekeyzer.com/). Again, a Group 94 design. Couple of things I like about this basic photography site – first, the content is good. Although its a little harder to find in my opinion (a few too many clicks to drill down to the subject matter). The photographs are worth checking out. Some very compelling stuff. Secondly, I like his photo stories section, the colors, the navigation, and so forth. Definitely an effective way to display photography.

The funny thing about the craigslist ad is the person wants a design like the Group 94 folks, but is advertising on craigslist to find the right designer, which usually means looking for an economical (read: cheap) solution. Aren’t we all.

Now not only do I have a dedicated DSL line straight from the phone box to my modem, but my second business phone line is finally up and running. I know this sounds completely mundane, but in the last few weeks I have been losing my work/dsl connection 30-40 times a day due to low-quality phone lines and bad connections at the junctions in our house, so to not lose my connection at all today is a minor miracle. I wonder if the recently deceased Pope ever worked for a telecommunications company? It could be the ticket to Sainthood.

To satiate your inner geek, here are some wicked Rad pictures of what I saw, and what I did, and what’s left to do to tighten this system up (or lock it down, depending on which side of the fence you hang on, or which side of the plate you swing from, or which side of the tracks you hail from…I could go on, but really…). Wicked, Frickin’ Rad. To sum up, I put this one wire thing into this other box thing and then connected that thing to the phone one. And check it dude – the thing, the one with the wires to my DSL deal, is like, totally called a POTS (means Plain Old Telephone (service)) DSL splitter. Wicked cool. Then I ran a new line along the roof line directly to a new phone jack, hooked it up, and the rest is sand in the wetsuit, braw.

My most brilliant (nearly literally) moment in the project? Well, phone lines are generally low voltage (around 40v) and amperage, so working with them is not that big a deal as far as the threat of death goes (unless you have clouds full of lightning banging into each other above you). The one exception to this however, is when the phone rings. An excerpt from the site, “The Natural Handyman“:

“However, when the phone rings, a series of high voltage AC surges come through the lines, up to 100 volts, and this can be dangerous, especially to people with health conditions, pacemakers, etc. And unless the phone company thinks your phone is busy, it will do its ringing thing, even if your phone is unplugged!!”

I can tell you, now, that if you go up on the roof to access that ill-placed junction box and you forget your wire strippers down below, and you just go for it and strip the wire with your teeth, and the phone happens to ring, you can get a pretty, *ahem*, Tasty, shock to those metal fillings you’ve never had removed. The good news is, I can now pick up shortwave radio signals just by opening my mouth, which should save me in the event that I’m ever lost with a professor on a three hour tour.

Well here we are, the first week of April, and we have decided as of this weekend to follow through with a very simple “think global act local” step – we are changing out nearly all of the light bulbs from incandescent to fluorescent. While it may seem silly to even mention it, its something that we’ve resisted in some ways because we like the warm color of the light that incandescent bulbs put off, and I’ve always found the bluish light from fluorescent lights to be kind of depressing. Which raises the question: given that the weather here generally has the same depressing effect in the winter, so if its depressing outdoors for months on end, how much sense does it really make to make the inside of the house depressing too? But with paying utilities for a bigger house (and a second house), and a growing awareness of environmental concerns that are going to be affecting us and our kids in the next few years, we have taken the simple step of replacing the bulbs. That and seeing Al Gore all over the media – exposure seems to be working. I was listening to Oregon Public Radio this morning and they had a program on that I am not familiar with, but was interesting – the program is Here and Now, and the subject today was things you can do to help out with slowing global warming. It was a discussion with the editor of Time magazine who has published an interesting set of articles on the subject. You can see the 51 things you can do here.

One other pretty cool thing that happened: Our friend David gave us a bunch of fluorescent bulbs as part of a giveaway program that is being sponsored by the Sustainable Business Network of Portland. Apparently members of the Portland chapter were challenged to give away more bulbs than members in the Austin(?) chapter, and he is participating in that effort. Pretty cool thing to do, and it filled in the gaps on the bulbs we hadn’t already put in.

According to the boxes of lights that I bought, by changing the bulbs I should be saving a whole bunch of money this year, to the tune of the equivalent of a moderate tax return. Hopefully we do see some of that happen, but I’m honestly a little skeptical, only because large companies like utilities, cable, and cel phone carriers seem to always find ways to get the extra cash one way or another. But I am also a bit jaded from living in Southern California, which is always that way unless you are doing cash deals for day laborers or cab drivers.

I have been waiting literally for months now to get the title for one of our vehicles sent from the California DMV, and have been on the phone numerous times with them to try to sort it out. Well as it happens, I will never get the title from California (which they never told me, nor were they able to find out apparently) – as the nice lady at the Oregon DMV helped me to sort out in the span of a 5 minute, no-wait DMV trip, the title was stuck in the Washington DMV system (where we bought the car). So I made one call to the DMV in Washington, with no hold time, and got the answer from a real person in about 3 minutes. They were able to tell me that the title was returned to them 3 years ago as undeliverable because we had moved, so all we needed to do was to “call Sheila across the street and she can send the title to you in a couple of days. Here’s her direct line…” – Done. And lo’ and behold: the title arrived in the mail today.

This weekend I am working on the phone lines, as I have been in this house for some time now. Our DSL signal drops every few minutes, and the problem appears to be in our house. I have checked out the phone lines and connection boxes here, and it is clear that the phone lines were upgraded with a home job at some point in the house’s past, which has led to a dizzying array of connections and cross-colored wiring throughout the house. Fortunately all of the wiring is run on the outside of the house, but that hasn’t simplified the lack of color scheme that has made this phone line exercise an amazing Rubik’s cube of wiring dementia. I have the parts ready to convert our incoming signal into a split line with a dedicated DSL cable running to the wall in my office – For now, that should fix the problem. There are lots of interesting articles on how to do this sort of thing, but if you’re interested here’s one of the simplest ones I’ve found, from a guy who calls himself the Phone-man. Seems to know his stuff, and so far his advice has been dead on. Hopefully this conversion will increase our reliability and speed.

We are pretty sure that Rima is a dealing with a bout of colic. She had a better night last night, but for about a week or so she’s pretty much crying nonstop unless we are holding her and bouncing a lot. Things calmed down a bit yesterday, which is good for us sanity-wise, but we are wondering about other things we can do to help her to be more comfortable. I found information on Wellements Organic Gripe Water, which we might give a try if she continues to have a hard time.

We’re hoping to find a farmer’s market this weekend and pick up some local organic produce. Most of the markets here are seasonal, usually open from sometime in May to October. But we know there are a few that are open earlier in the year, including the one on 21st that is open year-round now on Wednesdays, so that is one of our goals for the weekend. The weather here has definitely moved to spring-like, complete with mid-70′s temperatures and blue skies.

Unfortunately it was raining pretty heavily, so no photos of the daffodils, but it is a pretty incredible sight to see such a saturation of color covering acre after acre of land. I thought it was ironic that this was the uncle that I had most of my young adventures with (including swimming across an inlet that was inhabited by crocodiles – I kid you not), and here we are, talking about whether or not the tulips are in season for the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival and techniques for newborn sleep management. We are both thoroughly domesticated at this point, and that doesn’t seem to be a problem for either of us.
After a successful trip to Ikea (successful meaning we were able to manage both children in a public place for several hours without a major meltdown or emotional catastrophe), we came back home loaded down with new mugs for Jonah’s school, curtains, chairs, candles, napkins, and everything in between. We also rediscovered “the ball” – when Jonah was a baby he loved to be held while we bounced on an exercise ball. We took that thing everywhere. And Rima is no different – she Loves the ball. I’m not sure what it is about the ball that is so soothing to them, but whatever works is our mantra these days. And its working.

For the childhood official record of events, two things happened in the last 24 hours that should be duly noted. First, Rima smiled yesterday – not a “gassy” smile, but an actual reaction to April. Very very exciting. The second news (this just in): Jonah has finally gone number two on the toilet. It took a lot of work but he did it this morning for the first time. This may sound like a little too much information, or maybe not that big of a deal, but when you have been working on this for weeks to no avail and cleaning up after this sort of mess everywhere, day after day after day, little events like this are important to your sanity. Very, very good news for our nuclear unit.

Rima turned 1 month old a few days ago and she looks vastly different already. She is getting little rolls everywhere and we think she is about 9 lbs or so. She is also awake and alert a lot more, and is starting to focus more intently on here surroundings including her big brother, who loves to entertain her. That, and he also loves to wake her up just when we’ve gotten her to sleep… But if that is our biggest complaint, life is not so bad. As for Jonah, he is also growing rapidly – he’s outgrown his pants and shoes and is now a 3T and size 8 shoes. He is also refining his articulation and can say words like, “Japanese”. Although it can be challenging to manage a 2-year old’s emotional swings, we are really enjoying him. School has helped him quite a bit to settle down with other kids and with us, and he is able to comprehend delayed rewards so we can reason with him a little more to coax good behavior. One kind of cool thing: When his little cousin Ruben wanted the toys that Jonah was playing with, when Ruben would start to cry, several times this weekend Jonah would come up to him, offer him either the toy he wanted or another similar, and tell him, “Its ok. Here ya go.” and then give him a hug or a kiss on the cheek. He learned that at school, and it is definitely a refreshing change from some of his more struggling days.

And now, some more of the good stuff: baby photos. My, how fast they grow.

Does your 8 year old know what C4 explosives are?

Jonah and I had a tough time on Sunday in our ongoing effort to acclimate to our new location. We had a common goal, he and I: To find a playground in Oregon City (or, “the Original OC 97045″ as the shirts at the local pizza joint say) on a sunny day that has a semi-modern play structure, and if we’re lucky some friendly kids with whom he could play. We didn’t really anticipate what would ensue.

First things first: I know this entry is going to sound horribly biased and maybe snobbish, but gall’ dern’ (to use the local term for “dang it”) if I can’t seem to find a nice local place around here for Jonah to play. I have now taken him to 5 parks in Oregon City, and the only one that is reasonably fun for him is the one at his school, which is pretty good, but does not include swings for some reason. When its wet out (ah, the brilliance of park planners in this town), the play structure is slick enough that after slipping and smacking his upper lip on one of the climbing bars he felt the only way to safely get around was to scoot everywhere in a go cart racing position. Not to mention that they put the wood chips over a nice layer of good old Oregon dirt, which becomes a cesspool of mud with a sea of floating wood chips and litter (kind of like river full of logs…hey wait a minute, maybe that was on purpose…) hiding the ankle-deep muck. Has no one here ever been to a park that was designed for kids, not to mention something reasonably functional in less than perfect weather [rant number 1]? I know it takes a little bit of budget and some thought to prevent teenage fires, but couldn’t there be maybe just one trash can in which we could deposit the empty candy wrappers on the ground that Jonah is compelled to try to lick?

[begin unfair generalization rant number 2] Of course, when its not raining, I would expect that Oregonian parents would leave their cozy, smarmy rabbit holes and take the kids out to a park or two (and maybe open a window to release a little cat dander), but apparently that’s not on the local agenda – there must be too much television to be watched, or maybe its because that sun thing that we’ve heard about might just give you lime disease, make you sterile (heaven forbid that such a thing as the latter should happen here) or rob you of your god-given right to be too depressed to brush your teeth. I’ll have to watch the discovery channel to find out.

Now, granted, I am a bit upset [rant rebuttal]. And, again, Granted, we are moving here from an area that’s biggest annoyance is too many people at every playground all the time (well that and helicopters hovering constantly over our neighborhood waiting for the next freeway car chase), not the other way around [not a rant, just a fact]. And I must admit, in my wayward search for a playground on Sunday, I did enjoy the drive along the river, which was quite beautiful [rebuttal number 2]. But so far, at the playgrounds that I have been to in this historic burg, the first town and capitol of the great mulleted duck state, I have had 3 distinct but somehow intertwined experiences. Let me share.

Experience number 1: After the first park (Jonah’s school) turned into a failed attempt (too muddy and slippery and no swings, but the best of the lot), Jonah and I went to a large, clean-looking park on the river with a lot of walking trails and a set of swings. No slide or play structure of any kind, no basketball hoops, no low balance beams or see-saws, just swings and a pristine, expensive boat launch with a huge parking lot. Which was fine for the day – it was our second attempt at a park, and that worked. In fairness, it did have a small unoccupied concrete skatepark, which I applaud. But for experience number 1, we also had this [rant 3]: two guys, one in his late 20′s to early 30′s, and the other in his late teens to early 20′s, parked in front of the swings, by themselves, wearing greasy baseball caps with meticulously hand-curved ratty bills (the apparent modern male mullet-optional capped Oregon City look), hanging out drinking in their mid-80′s partially primered Camaro (it could have been an Iroc; I didn’t get a good look). Nothing else to do on a Saturday but sit parked in front of the children’s swings at 4 in the afternoon drinking coors or bud light (presumably – sorry, my bias shines through) in a beer cozy, smoking a cigarette or two. Nowhere to go, no other kids that they could claim as theirs, and not too worried about what it looks like. We lasted 10 minutes on the swings. And then it rained.

Experience number 2: Pre-game warm up at Jonah’s school (back to playground number 1). We wanted to acclimate him to his surroundings, so I took him back to the playground at his school to get him used to the idea that this is a place at which he will want to stay for a few hours when the time comes. Again, no kids there; mixed clouds with sun and not cold, so it was conceivable that there might be a child-parent team or two in attendance. For experience number 2, we get the troubled pre-teenage girls looking for attention set. 3 kids walk over from the neighborhood with their small nervous dog on a leash, which was then tethered to the bench. They were two tweens in that semi-oily, awkward-fitting jeans and bedazzled flip-flops place in life where your hair gets caught in your braces a lot and your armpits seem to eviscerate your essence more than they should, and their younger pre-tween sister, all 3 parent-free and looking for something to do. Jonah was happy to have some company, particularly older girls (we already know this is going to be trouble when he gets older; so be it.), and so followed and watched them closely. They were of course absorbed in their own, “you’re so stupid!” conversations and payed little attention to him, while the smallest attended to the dog, which was fine, but the conversation and look had the ring of one of the more common problems in rural Oregon [rant 4]: early teen girls who’s parents seem to offer little in the way of direction to stay out of trouble for their own sake, particularly with the local tavern predatory types or guys in Iroc-Z’s hanging out at playgrounds and 30-year-old malls. These girls were walking cauldrons of potential disaster, desperate for attention, hoping to be noticed for their newfound bifurcation of feminine identity, lacking the matured womanly guidance that all girls should have when they begin to discover that they have an innate power over their male counterparts simply by existing. Its hard to find a word or phrase to name the sense that you get when you encounter kids at this stage in life; but its a period of my daughter’s life that as a parent I will suffer and die to try to help guide her through, reasonably unscathed, if there is any possible way to influence her at all when the time comes. Based on empirical evidence I know it can be done. I wish it had been done for these children, these young ones who are most certainly someone’s precious babies. They came and went, seeing that attention was lacking, and we left shortly after. It was depressing. I know the word: Nappy. No, Grungy? Its like cotton mouth and candy canes when its drizzling, or not showering for days while eating potato chips with extra salt, kinda’ greasy, kinda’ bloaty, kinda…I know – Funky. That about covers it. Not really. But I give up. The upside: Jonah found the broken upper torso of a toy motocross racer half buried in the remains of the muddy sea, which was much more interesting (and tasty) than the other litter under the big slide.

Experience number 3: Our mission: check out the local park recommended in the Department of Parks and Recreation newsletter, the, “City of Oregon City Trail News.” Which led us to failed park number one for the day [rant 5], touted as a “children’s park,” which is now apparently used more as an off leash dog park (where the swing set area is now a large dog defecation repository, as opposed to a set of seats connected to chains from which one pushes and pulls their young child to altered states of glee). This park had a swing and one mother of an old metal slide, but that was it. Nothing to exhaust my little one into spontaneous REM sleep. So, back to the same school playground we went, with no swings of course, but at least something to climb on. We were alone there for quite some time despite the mid-sixties temperatures, sunny skies, and dried out structures (although the muddy wood chip litter sea was still partially in tact). Just when I was beginning to wonder yet again, where the children are, along came the following: Adults, 4 of them, with 4 kids, all adorned in various shades of camouflage or army green, blue jeans, and 3 of the 4 wearing the signature curved billed hand-formed caps. Overlooking my bias against the greasy cap thing, I thought this had promise. At the time they came over, I was on the phone with April telling her of our disappointing adventures at park 1, but told her that I should get off the phone because things were maybe changing for the better. I should have stayed on the phone if only to prove how things would go to someone else.

First of all, let me get this out of the way [rebuttal 3]: The kids were actually very good kids. Nothing against the kids. Nice enough, playing in a friendly fashion for the most part, and causing no harm. So Jonah was following them around again, trying to fit in and play the games they were playing, which mostly consisted of climbing up the slides and figuring out different ways of sliding down them. Jonah was following at a distance, but starting to see what the routine was.

The first tip-off that things were headed awry [rant 6 - the awakening] was when one of the children yelled down to one of the adults to come up to the top and slide down – the parent replied, “Naw I ain’t doin’ that – I’m too fat! ‘F I climbed up there, it’d be like if somebody took and wrapped a bunch of C4 around the legs of that thing and blew ‘em all out at the same time!” raucous laughter ensued, child and parent alike. Good family fun.

Now at this point, that’s not really a big deal [rebuttal 4, back to sleep]. I mean, it seems a little odd to me that an 8 year old would understand a reference to C4 explosives (and think it was funny), but no biggie – any modern video game system with a violent war game or two has probably introduced the concept to these kids. But it was then that I started to pay a little more attention to the parents. It was clear that they were either ex- or active military folks, which can be a good thing. It can also be a bad thing. Soldiers have to accept a culture of violence as part of the air they breathe, and while most right-wing folks would argue that life is only about survival (which often means to make it in this world you have to kill or be killed, thank you George Bush), we are trying to raise our kids separated from that kind of thinking in favor of changing the world in other ways. Its why I don’t really care to live in military towns. My way of thinking doesn’t really mesh too well with the “blow it up and ask questions later” approach to homemaking, childrearing, and political influence, and I am ok with that.

So to make a long story short, here is a list of the details [rant-free, just facts]: One guy with a t-shirt that says, “Everything I know I learned from GI Joe”, another with a Go Army shirt and hat, and the other two in various shades of army green shirts that I didn’t catch the details on. Fine. Next detail: They all (the adults) decided to try to do pull-ups on the jungle gym equipment – one guy could do 3, another guy whacked his head on one of the bars (note to self [rant-ish in the form of sarcasm]: if you are doing a pull-up by grabbing two bars (rather than a single bar), make sure that there is not another large metal bar evenly spaced between the two you grab unless you like the feeling of smashing the crown of your head into said large metal auxiliary bar), the third guy did 1 pull-up, and the girl decided to try to climb the fireman’s pole, an attempt that got her exactly 1.5 feet off the ground before giving up. Cool. Whatever. I don’t think I can do even 1, so I don’t care. Lots of talk about how, “when I was in boot camp I was underweight and blah blah had to do 50 ass-kicks blah blah corporal lalala blam fuddrucker mutherchuckers chigga chigga booyah hay!….” or something like that. guttural laughter again.

Meanwhile, the kids play was starting to crank up a notch or two. [facts from here on out, no ranting necessary] One of the older kids decided it would be fun to pretend to kill the other older girl with an imaginary knife. Ah the fun of pretending to stab one’s own siblings repeatedly about the head and neck while yelling, “Yeaaaa die sh–head die!” I think I remember doing that with my sisters while playing those yarn finger games (Jacob’s Ladder? I can’t remember). Good times.

Next, the girl says, “Hey I know! Lets pretend we’re kid eaters and we can eat the little kids! [to her younger brother] AAAGGHHHH I’m going to eat you kid!!!”…

Jonah was on the edge at this point. He has not been around a lot of openly aggressive kids, so I think at this turn of events he was a little more fascinated than scared, but it was hard to tell. The stabbing thing didn’t really phase him; I think it was the shear volume that was flipping little emergency switches in his brain. In the mean time I had moved closer to where he was, midway up the climbing structure.

“No I know – how about if we pretend we’re vicious dogs! Yeah and then I can attack you! RAar-Raarraarh raarararARRaar!!!”

This was critical mass for Jonah; that point at which the glass has overflowed and is not stopping, the microwave has melted the plastic into the macaroni and cheese, and the television that is perpetually running in the back of his mind has begun smoking and buzzing like the sound of light sabers clashing. In a fit of terror, he threw himself onto the stairs and started screaming and shaking, uncontrollably upset. I grabbed him quickly and reassured him that it was OK, that they were just playing, and that pretending to be a child-eating dog or pretending to stab your relatives can be good clean all-American fun, but he wasn’t buying it.

One of the parents came over right away and said, “Hey, were they pickin’ on him?” I told him no, they were just pretending to be dogs and it scared him. The overwhelming smell of all-day drinking accompanied the parental figure (who, did you know, could kill me with one hand in less than 3 seconds?), which explained a lot.

Jonah and I waited there for a few minutes hopeful that he would regain his composure a little and be able to get back to playing, but the kids continued to play in much the same fashion, and the adults as well (complete with two of them deciding it was a good time to reaffirm their vows (or at least the making out part)), so we decided to leave. On our way home, we passed another interesting site: two guys pulled over on the side of the highway trying to get into a fist fight over a traffic difference or maybe a disagreement about haute couture. One bearded flannel older man standing on the runner of his minivan using the passenger door as a shield, yelling and pointing, and the other mulleted capped younger man both shoving and pulling the minivan door trying to get beardzilla to engage him in a challenge of vehicular hubris. I turned the car around to see if I could get a better look (I have been reading a lot about the Portland inspiration for chuck palahniuk’s “Fight Club”) but by the time I got back to the scene they had both just driven off, I’m guessing to one of the many, many taverns in Oregon City to sort out their differences in a fit of alcoholic mediation.

[Rant over. Resume happy shiny reports on all things Portland.]

We’ve discovered that although there were quite a few lifestyle differences between us and the previous tenants, there are things that were planted last year that we are very excited to see. Of course, we have discovered a few other things that were less than disclosed, but other than some fish guts caked on the shelves of the greenhouse and the discovery that we have to break the handle off of the shed door to get in it, we are getting a lot of really great spring surprises.

I have never been particularly interested in bulbs per se, but the bulbs that are emerging here are quite spectacular, and I find myself going back to take photos again and again. The tulips and daffodils are springing up everywhere bringing life to their surroundings. We also have a small variety of mature fruit trees all around the yard, including cherry, plum, and apple trees, and they are all starting to gather steam to hopefully produce later in the year.
As we have spent time outside, Jonah has also found his favorite spots which are generally near places he can take his dump truck. He loves to poke around under the large cedar trees that line the property on two sides, and we know its only a matter of time before climbing them becomes his avocation.

He has also discovered a small pile of colored stones out near the driveway that came presumably from an old fish tank or spilled treasure chest (“arrrrrghhh, soccer!”), but he has spent many hours looking for just the right colored rocks to put in his dumptruck (which acts as a tumbler when he drives the druck back to the house). He is particularly fond of the yellow ones. Jonah has also discovered that he is not afraid of grubs, worms, ants, or bees (for better or worse), and is fascinated by them. He loves to make little beds for them, particularly the worms, and tell them, “its ok. time for ni-night.” Its about the cutest thing there is. Although the grubs are still pretty gross. He decided he wanted to keep one in his pocket. I think that must be something he got from his mom’s side of the family, because I don’t think that is in my DNA. I have no means of shifting from spring flowers to dinner, so I’ll just say this: Indian food is comfort for us. Some of the best meals of my life have been curry-based, and it is one cuisine that I can never seem to get enough of.
In the span of just a few short days, we have become a Mac household, and we are never, ever going back. I fought it for years, arguing with my Mac-devoted-designer sister that Windows had everything that Mac had without the price tag. I argued that the Windows approach simply gives you more options from hardware to software, and that as long as you spend a little time getting to know the ins and outs of a Windows box, the user experience is equally as good.

I could not have been more wrong.

I am typing this on my new-to-me G5, which I bought on craigslist primarily for music recording. This thing is, in a word, incredible.

Let me just say that I have a long and satisfied history with Windows computers. I wish that it was the frustration of the Windows interface that turned me to this dark and evil anodized chalice, but alas, it was simply a need to run audio hardware and software that Windows handles very poorly. Not that I really blame Bill and his band of geniuses; in all honesty I believe it truly is just a different approach to computer hardware. Windows approaches computing with the broad stroke mentality: cover as many hardware and software options as possible, making it easy for other companies to add and remove components to and from the system. Apple took the polarization approach, which was basically to focus on a few select partners and options, alienate anyone not interested, and trust that users would tithe accordingly. And tithe they did. This holy war has been won financially by Microsoft, but the emotional victory goes hands-down to Apple. Most users use Windows as a default I think; its readily available, cheap, and reasonably upgradeable (not to mention, in recent years, really stable unless you are mucking around with things because you can (not because you should) (which seems to me to be what most of the Web geek-writers who complain about stability on Windows seem to be doing these days – since Win2k forward, I have Hammered my machines in test environments and in daily production use, and I simply do not have OS stability problems. Ever. Unless I do things like delete files I shouldn’t, or mess around in the registry when I shouldn’t, or load filesharing software that I shouldn’t.). Mac on the other hand created passion and loyalty with the “if you don’t like it too bad” mantra, and it worked. Even when Apple upgrades their OS and forces users to reinvest in all of the legitimate software they own if they want to keep up, people do it. And, sad to say, I may have just joined the ranks of the lemmings.

Things I like: Speed. It starts up and shuts down twice as fast as its Windows counterpart, which is a high end Dell box that I have found to be incredibly stable and reliable. But not as fast out of the box, in any way. Firefox is even faster over my shared wireless connection, and I don’t know how, but all Internet activity is just plain quicker. I like the clean, logical file system. And the smooth, slick interface. No incessant requests from Microsoft to patch my system. No incessant, unrelenting requests from Microsoft to install the Malicious Software Removal tool that I do not want (for the millionth time, NO). No incessant requests from Microsoft to “help me” make sure my software is legit (does anyone really believe that corporate-spun-up nonsense about helping? c’mon. Yet another example of Microsoft living in a vacuum. If you don’t believe me, try to make a legitimate feature suggestion to the Office team – they believe they are invincible, and have users so figured out that they need not consort with the likes of anyone not in their coven of expertise. Users be damned – we are Officia!). Other things I like (and this is an unfair comparison since MS doesn’t control the hardware like Apple does, but that is part of the path they each chose, so here goes): 2 frickin’ cables to plug in. TWO. Power, and monitor. Not even Monitor Power, just Monitor. And a swivel Monitor cable. And no thumbscrews on the monitor cable, just a pinch and a click. I know it sounds ridiculous to care about such things (speaking as a Windows user), but when you have gotten used to the convoluted Windows approach to hardware and move over to the simple, direct Mac approach, it makes a difference.

Everything is just easier.

Though I have to admit…being the geekish occasional luddite that I am, I had my first of many little Windows convert braindead moments. The G5 is so industrially minimal that I could not figure out one basic thing…How do you eject the superdrive to insert a disc? Had to eat my pride and call my sister on that one. Pain. But once I got it, I loved it. To that end, I offer this cardinal sin of blogging, the Ode. . .

Oh Macsalot, sweet Macsalot,
How do I love thee.
Thou art more aluminum, and processor more temperate.
Yea tho I walk through the valley of the shadow of the blue screen of death, Yet I shall fear no single button mouse.

You are my sunshine, mon only sunshine,
You make Pro Tools happy, when skies are grey (that’s a shout out to Portland, y’all),
You’ll never know just, how much I love you (or maybe you will, Hal a.k.a Tiger),
Oh please don’t take, my Steve Jobs away (for tax evasion or some other ridiculous trumped up reason).
